The Source

The Source is a two year nationwide data analysis and benchmarking project which is creating a clear picture of audiences across Scotland. Working with over 40 arts organisations, from major venues to the national touring companies, the Source is a ground breaking intelligence sharing and training catalyst which uses the audience data extracted from box offices to provide a strategic context and tactical planning information for participating organisations.

Aims

Started in early 2009, this joint project between Federation of Scottish Theatre, The Audience Business and Culture Sparks, aims to bring the performing arts sector together to create a wider understanding of audiences and actionable intelligence to inform activities and planning. The project also aims to promote best practice around collection, analysis, useage and sharing of data through partnership working and training.

Approach

Using the latest technology to extract and manipulate data from the box offices across Scotland, The Audience Business and Culture Sparks supply participating organisations with quarterly audience reports against a Scottish benchmark. Other outputs include:

  • sector wide training needs analysis
  • systems health check with participation venues
  • a series of forums across the country to share project updates and review most up to date benchmarks and intelligence
  • data workshops – three practical training sessions under the headings Data Control, Data Police and Data Detective
